En abril y mayo de 2021, la Illinois School of Architecutre de la University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois, Estados Unidos), la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), y la Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura del Vallès de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-Barcelona Tech, coorganizaron un ciclo internacional de mesas redondas dedicadas a la Formación en Arquitectura. Como decíamos entonces, el momento de plantearnos una reflexión sobre la formación en arquitectura era propicio: la pandemia del CoVID-19 nos había obligado a poner en práctica de forma rápida y lo más eficientemente posible soluciones de emergencia para continuar con la misión de propia de una universidad: aprender y enseñar. En aquel momento, tan inesperado como crítico, la educación a distancia por vía digital y telemática fue la única forma que nos permitió continuar con los ciclos lectivos tanto en el hemisferio norte como en el sur. Muy pronto, la enseñanza por vía telemática (online) se reveló como una herramienta mucho más dúctil que lo que muchos imaginábamos, apta también para mantener la comunicación y recrear espacios de colaboración a nivel docente e institucional. Aún con muchas limitaciones, algunas previsibles, otras no, ese nuevo espacio desprovisto de muros y de fronteras, emergió como un punto de encuentro ideal para convocar un foro donde pudiéramos intercambiar ideas y discutir sobre lo que estaba aconteciendo. La fluidez de los intercambios nos llevó de forma natural a una consideración más amplia que abarcó el estado actual de la educación en Arquitectura. Aquel primer ciclo de cinco mesas redondas contó con la participación de representantes de las tres instituciones organizadoras y de escuelas o facultades de arquitectura de otros países (tres continentes). El tema central de aquel ciclo fue la consideración del proyecto como columna vertebral de la formación en arquitectura. Impulsados por el éxito de la convocatoria (cientos de inscriptos que participaron desde más de una docena de países), entendimos, ya desde antes del inicio de la primera mesa redonda, que un verdadero debate sobre la formación en arquitectura debía trascender la centralidad del proyecto en el proceso formativo. Así se gestó el segundo ciclo de On Architectural Education, esta vez enfocado desde una perspectiva más transversal que buscó trascender las típicas áreas departamentales y sumirse en una exploración amplia y abierta de los Procesos Formativos: aprender y enseñar. Este segundo ciclo tuvo lugar en noviembre y diciembre de 2021 y coincidió con la publicación del volumen en el que se recogieron versiones post-facto de las ponencias presentadas en el primer ciclo de mesas redondas. Este segundo volumen, compaginado por Virginia Selene Deluca (docente de Teoría de la Arquitectura en la Universidad Nacional de La Plata), presenta textos nuevamente elaborados post-facto de 17 de las 24 ponencias del segundo ciclo de mesas redondas.
In April and May 2021, the Illinois School of Architecture of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois, USA), the Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), and the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura del Vallès of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-Barcelona Tech, co-organized an international cycle of round tables dedicated to Architectural Education. As we stated then, the moment to reflect on architectural education was propitious: the CoVID-19 pandemic had forced us to implement emergency solutions quickly and as efficiently as possible to continue with the typical missions of a university: learning and teaching. At that critical and unexpected moment, distance education by digital and telematic means was the only way that allowed us to continue with the teaching cycles in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Very soon, online teaching proved to be a much more flexible tool than many of us had imagined, also appropriate for establishing a more fluid and spontaneous communication at the teaching and institutional level than those we were used to using. Even with many limitations, some foreseeable, others not, a new space, collaborative and supportive, emerged within the slim thickness of computer screens, a space where school walls and national borders seemed to disappear, an ideal meeting point to convene a forum where we could exchange ideas and discuss what was happening and that led us to a broader consideration that encompassed the current state of education in Architecture as a whole. That first cycle of five round tables was animated by representatives of the three organizing institutions and representatives of schools of architecture from five other countries (three continents). The central theme of that cycle was the consideration of the project as the architectural design studio as the backbone of architectural education. Encouraged by the success of the call (hundreds of participants from more than a dozen countries), we understood, even before the start of the firstround table, that a true debate on architectural education should transcend the centrality of the project in the educational process. A second cycle was bound to resume the debate with the same format (round tables with representatives of the three organizing schools/faculties and special guests from other institutions of international prestige) but this time approaching the topic from a more transversal perspective. This perspective had to transcend the typical departmental areas and instead be immersed into a wide and open exploration of the formative processes understood as the reciprocally dependent and complementary acts of learning and teaching. This second cycle took place in November and December 2021 and coincided with the publication of the volume containing post-facto versions of the papers presented in the first cycle of round tables. This second volume, edited by Virginia Selene Deluca (teacher of Architecture Theory at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata), presents newly elaborated post-facto texts of 17 of the 24 presentations of the second cycle of round tables.
